Who we are
Rancho Panoramo is a place of "warm minimalism"—quiet, grounded, and shaped by the land around it. While we spent six years obsessing over the details of experiential design—learning how to quiet visual noise and limit distraction through quality—the true reward has been the joy of sharing it.
We designed this house as a vessel for our own family to slow down and connect, and it has been a profound discovery to see it do the exact same thing for our guests. Whether you are here to listen to music, cook a slow meal, or just sit in silence, the house is designed to get out of your way so you can focus on the experience.
"There's a quiet beauty to the space that really stays with you... The design, the light, the way it blends into the landscape—there's a calm, grounding energy to it." — Naomi, May 2025

▬ THE LISTENING ROOM ▬
The heart of the property is the dedicated Listening Building. This acoustically treated sanctuary features an 11-foot wide window framing the stillness of the National Park and the million-year-old rock formations that define this ancient landscape.
What began as a simple desire to "jam some tunes" has grown into a much deeper experience. To me, this room is meditation. It is church. But it is also a place for connection—our family has shared countless memorable nights here watching films and concert footage together. It is designed to accommodate both the solitary listener and the family movie night with equal reverence.

▬ CHEF'S KITCHEN ▬
We cook serious meals here, and we suspect you might too. We know the frustration of renting a beautiful home only to find dull knives and cheap plates, so we didn't skimp. If you appreciate quality tools, you will feel right at home here.
The space is anchored by solid French Oak cabinetry and a massive island with a 36” induction cooktop in the center. The countertops are solid matte granite, so you can set hot pans down directly as you work. We gather at the 9-foot solid slab Italian Oak dining table.
⟫ Ceramics: Hand-thrown dinnerware from Anthropologie and Heath Ceramics
⟫ Knives: A proper selection of Japanese and German blades
⟫ Cookware: 7-ply Cuisinart stainless steel pans + LG enamel dutch oven
⟫ Coffee: Fellow Aiden coffee maker for precision brewing
⟫ Appliances: Gaggenau stove, Vitamix blender, Zojirushi rice maker, Cuisinart food processor
⟫ Water: 7-stage filtered water tap
▬ OUTDOOR LIVING ▬
For me, the courtyard is the pulse of the home. Evenings here find their own rhythm—music on the speakers, a fire building in the oven, and the slow shift from sunset to a dark sky filled with stars. You can see the faint "flicker of life" from the highway miles in the distance, but up here, the only sound is the crackle of the wood.
• The Hearth: Center stage is our 50” wood-fired pizza oven. We use it for searing steaks, roasting vegetables, and fast, high-heat cooking. Don't be intimidated; guests consistently embrace this feature. We provide full instructions and wood.
• The Station: A professional 40” Lion Gas Grill and a prep station with a dual-drawer outdoor refrigerator keep ingredients fresh and drinks cold.
• The Table: A massive 12-foot dining table crafted from a single slab of Brazilian Afromosia. Perfect for breakfast or dinner under the stars.
▬ REST & RECOVERY ▬
• The Hot Tub: Sits high on the property with unobstructed North views. Crafted from old-growth redwood and heated by a real fire, offering a silence you can't get with electric tubs.
• The Plunge: For warmer days, cool off in the cowboy tub or the seasonal 8-foot round pool (April–Oct).
• The Materials: The home is a study in craft—Western Red Cedar siding, vertical grain hemlock interiors, and tadelakt Moroccan plaster showers.
▬ DESIGNED BY AM PROJECTS ▬
After a career as a director, Anthony Mathile spent six years designing and building Rancho Panoramo by hand—shifting his focus from storytelling to design and carpentry. AM Projects is the result of that devotion.
Based in Joshua Tree, our projects span from bespoke furniture and listening rooms to ground-up residences. Shaped by fine carpentry, joinery, and material craft, our practice seeks to quiet the visual and sonic noise of modern life, opening space for intention and community.
Simple forms tuned to the land. Warmth and clarity in proportion. The resonance of wood.
